Last month we watched in horror as children ran out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida with their hands above their heads after a person shot and killed 17 students and staff, and injured at least 14 others. This weekend we Marched for Our Lives throughout the country demanding change from our lawmakers.
In New York that change is an "Extreme Risk" law. This law would create an "Extreme Risk Protection Order" that could be requested by family members or law enforcement officers, empowering New York to prevent warning signs from turning into tragedies, like the Parkland school shooting.
This bill has passed the New York State Assembly and will be voted on next in the Senate.
Send your postcard to your New York senators and demand that they pass an "Extreme Risk" Law in New York.
States are stepping up to take action and pass "Extreme Risk" Laws — New York should be next.
These laws create an Extreme Risk Protection Order that family members and law enforcement can request to temporarily prohibit a person from having guns before they pose a significant danger to themselves or others. When family members are empowered to act, they can prevent warning signs from turning into a mass shooting or gun suicide.
New York needs an "Extreme Risk" Law now and I urge you to make passing one a priority.
