As the nation continues to demand justice for Ahmaud Arbery, some Georgia lawmakers are calling for a repeal of the state's racist Stand your Ground law.
Passed in 2006, Georgia's Stand Your Ground law upends centuries of traditional self-defense doctrine. It threatens public safety by encouraging armed vigilantism, allowing a person to kill another person in a public area even when they can clearly and safely walk away from the danger.
Stand Your Ground laws are associated with increases in homicides and injuries across different demographics and neighborhoods, while disproportionately impacting communities of color.
