Dear Senator,
As an Arkansan, I'm asking you to oppose SB 484, a dangerous Stand Your Ground bill.
Stand Your Ground laws put our children, families, and communities at risk. Stand Your Ground Laws are associated with clear increases in homicides and encourage violence, often among those with violent backgrounds. In Florida, nearly 60 percent of people who claimed stand your ground as a defense had been arrested before. At least 30 people nationwide are killed each month as a result of Stand Your Ground laws.
Arkansas law already provides for the ability of people to defend themselves, and there is no evidence the system is not working. Rather, this bill would upend self-defense law and allow people to shoot first and ask questions later.
Please oppose SB 484, this will only make our state less safe and increase gun violence in Arkansas.
