Everytown for Gun Safety

Help Stop an Extreme Gun Bill in Louisiana!

Extreme gun bill HB140 would prohibit local officials from keeping guns out of commercial establishments and public buildings where they've already decided firearms are not appropriate—including establishments that serve alcohol and buildings where children play.

HB140 would prohibit local governments from prohibiting firearms in public recreation areas where kids play, and your member of the Louisiana State Senate needs to hear from you to oppose it.

Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I urge you to reject extreme gun bill HB140.

HB 140 is an extreme proposal that would prohibit local officials from keeping guns out of commercial establishments and public buildings where they have decided firearms are not appropriate -- including establishments that serve alcohol and buildings where children play.

Many localities have used their authority to prohibit firearms in areas where children play, including parks, playgrounds, and buildings where youth recreational activities take place. Guns don’t belong around our children when playing basketball, soccer, or any other program. Unfortunately, there are many examples around the country of adults mishandling guns, children gaining access, and even unintentional discharges in these exact types of environments. This bill would also preempt local laws in Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Thibodaux, Lafayette, Hammond, Mandeville, Kenner, Lake Charles, and Port Allen, who all prohibit firearms in all businesses where alcohol is sold and consumed.

Especially during this time when localities face extreme budget shortfalls, we shouldn’t strip them of the ability to make decisions around public safety which could have impacts like higher security costs. HB140 would eliminate the authority of local governments to prohibit guns in commercial establishments and public buildings, gutting a key way that local governments protect their communities from gun violence.

Please reject this dangerous legislation and vote NO on HB140.
