Everytown for Gun Safety

Ohio Legislature: Don’t gut our gun laws!

With just weeks left in the 2018 legislative session, the gun lobby is pressuring the Ohio legislature to consider a bill that would systematically weaken our state’s gun safety laws.

HB 228 would put children, families and communities at risk by:

  • Making Ohio a Stand Your Ground state. This would upend traditional self-defense law in Ohio and allow a person to shoot to kill in public, even when there is a clear and safe alternative.
  • Encouraging people to flout the law and carry hidden, loaded handguns in public without a permit or safety training. Under current Ohio law, people who have recently been convicted of a violent misdemeanor cannot hold a concealed handgun license. But HB 228 would roll this protection back and make it easy for these criminals to carry concealed handguns in public.
  • Allowing out-of-state special interest groups to sue Ohio cities and towns for attempting to enact or enforce local solutions to gun violence. The punitive preemption provision included in HB 228 is an attempt to punish and intimidate local officials and potentially allow the gun lobby’s attorneys to collect large payouts at taxpayers’ expense.

HB 228 is dangerous for Ohio. Send your lawmaker a message TODAY — before this legislation moves any further.
