Everytown for Gun Safety

Send a message: Machine guns have no place in our communities!

Two critical gun safety bills that could help make NY safer were just introduced in our state legislature.

These bills are a monumental step forward in holding the gun industry accountable and preventing regular pistols from being turned into machine guns that can fire up to 1,200 rounds per minute.

The harm caused by these converted pistols can not be understated.

Send a message to your legislator urging them to co-sponsor and pass these bills swiftly this session:

Dear Lawmaker,

As your constituent, I urge you to co-sponsor and prioritize S.7365-A (Hoylman-Sigal)/A.10053 (Simon) and S.9225 (Myrie)/legislation pending bill number introduced by Assemblymember Solages.

This key package of bills would ensure that firearm manufacturers do their part to prevent the spread of machine guns in our communities.

For decades, the gun manufacturer Glock has known that its handguns are uniquely susceptible to being converted into illegal machine guns simply by attaching a small, inexpensive plastic device known as a "Glock switch." These switches are illegal under federal and state law, but are easy to find online or 3D print at home, can cost as little as $25, and can be installed with nothing but a screwdriver.

They are spreading rapidly in communities across the U.S., endangering us all. The ATF announced in January 2024 that law enforcement have recovered more than 31,000 machine gun conversion devices, including Glock switches, over the past five years. However, Glock has refused to redesign their handguns to prevent criminals from modifying them—despite the fact that no other major gun manufacturer's handguns are so easily convertible to machine guns in this way.

These two bills would work hand in hand by taking two complementary steps to require gun companies finally to do their part to solve this problem and protect our communities:

S. 7365 / A.10053 updates New York's landmark gun industry accountability law to explicitly require firearm manufacturers to take steps to ensure their firearms cannot be easily turned into machine guns simply by the installation of Glock switches—enabling them to be held accountable in court if they fail to do so.

S.9225 prohibits the future sales of any semi-automatic handguns in New York—like Glocks and their copies—that can easily be converted into these deadly machine guns simply by attaching a Glock switch. It does not require current owners of these handguns to relinquish them or modify them in any way—it only affects future sales. It also doesn't restrict sales to law enforcement.

Please cosponsor these important bills and push for them to be passed. Thank you.
