Everytown for Gun Safety

Minnesota Needs Strong Gun Laws

The Minnesota legislature is considering two important pieces of gun legislation: one that would help prevent gun tragedies like gun suicides and mass shootings before they happen, and another that would expand background checks on gun sales.

Send a message to your lawmaker and ask them to support both of these lifesaving policies!

As your constituent, I ask you to show support for requiring background checks on all gun sales and creating a Red Flag law in Minnesota.

Background checks on all gun sales has overwhelming support from Minnesota voters. According to polling done in 2018 by the Star Tribune, 9 in 10 Minnesotans support criminal background checks on all gun sales. So far, dozens of lawmakers have showed support for expanding background checks in the House by co-sponsoring pending legislation.

On average, one Minnesota resident dies by gun suicide every day. A Red Flag law would empower law enforcement officers to seek Extreme Risk Protection Orders, court orders temporarily blocking people displaying signs of being a threat to themselves or others from having guns. When a person is in crisis, law enforcement officers are often among the first to see the warning signs that people usually display before committing an act of gun violence. Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation has seen bipartisan support nationwide and I hope you'll show your support too by voting when you have an opportunity.

I look forward to seeing you vote in line with policies that keep Minnesotans safe this session, including background checks on all gun sales and an Extreme Risk Protection Order law.
