Everytown for Gun Safety

Tell Your Ohio Senator: Pass Gun Safety Legislation

The Ohio State Senate has the opportunity to take up important gun safety bills to help prevent future gun tragedies in the wake of the Dayton mass shooting.

SB 183 and SB 184 would require background checks on all gun sales and create a strong Red Flag law, which would empower family members and law enforcement officers to ask a court to temporarily prohibit firearm access for individuals who pose a serious danger to themselves or others.

Send your Ohio senator a message urging them to pass a strong Red Flag bill and background checks on all gun sales >>

Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I'm urging you to take action on gun violence prevention and pass gun safety legislation.

Support SB 183 and SB 184 — two gun safety bills that are currently in the State Senate with bipartisan support. Enacting a Red Flag law and requiring background checks on all gun sales would help us prevent future gun tragedies.

Current law only requires background checks for sales by licensed sellers, which leaves unlicensed sellers unregulated and unchecked. In 2018 alone, there were 127,524 online ads offering guns for sale in Ohio with no background check legally required. States that require a background check on all gun sales have homicide rates 10 percent lower than states without them. Additionally, states that require background checks for handgun sales are associated with lower gun trafficking rates. Ohio should pass SB 183 to prevent criminals from gaining easy access to firearms.

17 states and DC have already enacted Red Flag laws, which empower family members and law enforcement officers to ask a court to temporarily remove firearms from an individual if there is evidence that they are a danger to themselves or others. Ohio should follow their lead and pass SB 184 to prioritize public safety.

In the wake of the Dayton tragedy, I urge you to pass SB 183 and SB 184 and protect Ohioans.
