The Louisiana Senate votes soon on a bill that would put our communities at further risk of gun violence by allowing districts to designate teachers, administrators, and retired teachers as voluntary "school protection officers" and authorize them to carry concealed firearms in any school in the district.
Our lawmakers need to hear opposition from Louisianans before they vote.
Send the following message to Louisiana lawmakers urging them to vote NO on arming teachers and administrators >>
Dear Senator,
As a Louisiana resident, I strongly urge you to oppose the arming teachers bill HB 37.
If passed, this bill would allow districts to designate teachers and administrators and/or retired teachers to be voluntary "school protection officers" and authorize them to carry concealed firearms in any school in the district.
This is not the legislation our state needs to address the rising levels of gun violence and it certainly won't protect our children from gun violence.
Arming teachers will increase the risk of shootings. Access to a firearm, regardless of age, triples the risk of death by suicide and doubles the risk of death by homicide. There have been several incidents of guns unintentionally discharged on school grounds by school staff.
Our nation is facing a gun violence crisis. Your job is to enact stronger gun laws to keep us and our families safe, not weaker ones.
Please do the right thing and oppose HB 37.
