Dear U.S. Representative,

In the coming weeks, you will have the opportunity to vote on lifesaving gun safety measures. They are based on solutions that are proven to work, and will keep our communities safe. They include the Disarm Hate Act, the Keep Americans Safe Act, and the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019.

H.R. 2708, the Disarm Hate Act, would close a dangerous loophole in federal law by prohibiting people convicted of violent or threatening hate crimes from having guns. Hate crimes have been on the rise in the U.S. since 2016. This policy would help prevent white supremacists and other people fueled by hate from getting a firearm.

H.R. 1186, the Keep Americans Safe Act, would prohibit high-capacity firearm magazines, devices frequently used in mass shootings and daily gun violence across the country. They are exceptionally deadly, and research has found that prohibiting them reduces gun violence.

The Extreme Risk Protection Order Act would empower family members and law enforcement across the country to intervene when a person is in crisis and poses a danger to themselves or others, while protecting due process rights of all involved. This bill supports states that have passed Extreme Risk (or "Red Flag") laws, encouraging additional states to do the same, and establishes a strong federal Extreme Risk process that can be used in federal courts in all fifty states. This bill would work to stop mass shootings before they occur by acting on clear warning signs, and would introduce a strong preventative measure to help those at risk of firearm suicide.
