YouTube has a responsibility to ensure that videos on its platform do not enable violence.
Right now, videos on YouTube can provide would-be shooters with the inspiration and knowledge to build or modify firearms they can use to shoot and kill people. It's a growing threat to public safety, shown most recently by the Buffalo shooter, who turned to online gun communities—including those posting videos on YouTube—to prepare to commit a mass shooting.
In order to combat this extremism, YouTube must enforce its existing community guidelines, including its existing prohibitions on content that provides tutorials on how to manufacture weapons, silencers, and other firearms accessories. YouTube clearly needs to put more resources into content moderation with respect to guns, so that addressing this extremism is proactive.
We need YouTube to take this crisis seriously and help prevent gun violence.
