Poll after poll has shown what most people already know: an overwhelming majority of gun owners support background checks for all gun sales -- and according to a poll conducted by Republican pollster Frank Luntz, that majority includes 74% of NRA members. That's because gun owners in this country think that undergoing a 90-second background check before buying a gun is not an infringement on their liberties -- but a simple way to save lives and keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people.
As recently as 1999, the Washington leadership of the NRA agreed. The NRA's chief lobbyist Wayne LaPierre testified in Congress in support of expanding background checks, saying: "We think it's reasonable to provide mandatory instant criminal background checks for every sale at every gun show. No loopholes anywhere for anyone."
But today, the NRA's Washington leadership has chosen to protect the profit margins of their gun industry funders instead of standing with the majority of gun owners and the American public.
Tell the NRA leadership to stand with gun owners and the American public and stop opposing expanded background check legislation. Add your name to the petition by submitting your information to the form on the right.
