Everytown for Gun Safety

Missouri State Senators: Reject this Shoot First Expansion!

Missouri lawmakers want to amend our state's already-dangerous "Shoot First" law, with new language that would ban survivors from taking civil legal action against any shooter who successfully uses a "self-defense" argument.

We're still healing from the tragedy at the Kansas City Chiefs Championship Parade—and this is how our lawmakers respond?

Missouri's weak gun laws led us to this heartbreak. We can't let this bad bill pass. Tell your state senator: Vote NO >>

Dear Lawmaker,

As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on SB 989.

SB 989 would expand Missouri’s current "Shoot First" law by providing immunity from civil liability for people that successfully invoked the ‘stand your ground’ defense in their criminal cases.

This differs from most other criminal actions, where perpetrators can typically be held civilly liable for the harm they cause. Given the pain caused by gun violence, adopting this policy would make little sense for our communities.

The tragic shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl Championship parade was a terrifying reminder of how our state's abysmal gun laws put all of us at an even greater risk of gun violence. SB 989 only worsens this crisis.

Again, I urge you to vote NO on SB 989.
