Everytown for Gun Safety

Minnesota: Require Background Checks on All Gun Sales

A loophole in federal law enables people with dangerous histories, like convicted felons and domestic abusers, to purchase guns without a background check — simply by finding an unlicensed seller. But a new bill would close this dangerous loophole in Minnesota.

Tell your elected officials at the statehouse to support legislation to require background checks on all gun sales.

I am writing to you as your constituent to ask you to pass legislation requiring background checks on all gun sales. Your colleagues in the Senate have shown tremendous leadership in supporting this legislation and I’m counting on you to follow their lead and take a stand for Minnesota public safety.

A loophole in federal law enables convicted felons, domestic abusers, and other people with dangerous histories to buy guns without background check — simply by finding an unlicensed seller. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia already go beyond federal law to require background checks on all handgun sales.

Background checks are also supported by 82% of Minnesotans and 97% of gun owners nationwide.

I hope you'll support life-saving legislation to require background checks on all gun sales.
