When you add your name, the following message will go to key lawmakers:
Dear Lawmaker,
As a concerned Minnesotan, I urge you to support including background checks on all handgun sales and a Red Flag provision in the omnibus public safety budget bill that you’re working to negotiate.
Background checks on all gun sales has overwhelming support from Minnesota voters. According to polling done in 2018 by the Star Tribune, 9 in 10 Minnesotans support criminal background checks on all gun sales. The background checks provisions the House passed in SF 802 are widely supported by Minnesota law enforcement, including the Chiefs of Police Association, Sheriffs Association, County Attorneys Association, and the Police and Peace Officers Association.
On average, one Minnesota resident dies by gun suicide every day. When a person is in crisis, law enforcement officers are often among the first to see the warning signs that people usually display before committing an act of gun violence. A Red Flag law would empower law enforcement officers to seek Extreme Risk Protection Orders, court orders temporarily blocking people displaying signs of being a threat to themselves or others from having guns. Extreme Risk Protection Order legislation has seen bipartisan support nationwide and I hope you'll show your support too by voting in favor of it when you have an opportunity.
I look forward to seeing you vote in line with policies that keep Minnesotans safe this session, including voting in favor of background checks and a Red Flag law.
