Everytown for Gun Safety

Tell Michigan Lawmakers: Keep Guns Out of the Hands of Domestic Abusers

Domestic violence and guns are a deadly mix. In a domestic violence situation, access to a gun makes it five times more likely that a woman will be killed.

HB 4497 and HB 4498 would prohibit people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes and people subject to active personal protection orders from purchasing or possessing guns. These bills would enable Michigan police to better protect women and families by keeping guns out of the hands of their abusers.

Tell Michigan lawmakers to support HB 4497 and HB 4498 >>

As your constituent, I'm calling on you to prioritize the safety of Michigan residents this legislative session by supporting HB 4497 and HB 4498 — important domestic violence bills currently in the House Judiciary Committee.

Federal law currently prohibits people convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence and those subject to active personal protection orders from possessing firearms. But Michigan law enforcement officers need a matching state-level law to protect our communities. Over two dozen states have enacted similar laws, many with strong bipartisan support, but Michigan has yet to take action.

Research shows that states with laws prohibiting people subject to domestic violence protection orders from possessing firearms have seen a 13 percent reduction in intimate partner firearm homicides.

I urge you to support HB 4497 and HB 4498 to protect Michigan women and families from deadly domestic violence.
