Everytown for Gun Safety

LAUSD: Require Information on Safe Storage!

The Los Angeles Unified School District has an opportunity to prevent school shootings by raising awareness that firearms need to be stored responsibly and not accessible to LAUSD students.

Under current Los Angeles City local law and California state law, firearm owners are required to responsibly store their weapons locked and unloaded, greatly decreasing the chances of guns getting into the hands of children.

The majority of school shootings occur after a student has accessed unsecured guns from a parent or family member’s home. Additionally, 600 American children die by firearm suicide each year and 100 are unintentionally shot and killed.

As a concerned Los Angeles citizen residing in the Los Angeles Unified School District, I support the school district’s adoption of a policy that would require information on responsible storage to be sent home with students to educate parents of their responsibility under city and state law to properly secure any firearms they may possess.

An overwhelming body of evidence indicates that most school shooters access their firearms from the home of a parent or family member. It is imperative that LAUSD parents understand their responsibilities under the law and to the broader community to help keep our K-12 schools safe.

Please adopt a policy to require information on responsible storage and associated laws be sent home with all LAUSD students as soon as possible.
