Everytown for Gun Safety

Illinois Lawmakers Need to Act Fast to Stop the Spread of DIY Machine Guns

DIY machine guns—made with easily converted handguns and a tiny piece of plastic known as a "switch"—are popping up all over our state at an alarming rate. These devices take less time to make than a pot of coffee, and can fire at a rate of up to 1,200 rounds per minute.

We need our Illinois lawmakers to act to stop the spread of these deadly devices this session. Waiting to take action means more DIY machine guns on our streets and in our communities.

The good news is that lawmakers have introduced a bill that could stop the flow of these weapons into Illinois. But lawmakers need to hear from you before they vote on it.

Send your message NOW. Tell your lawmakers to stop DIY machine guns in 2026!

Dear Lawmaker

As an Illinois resident, I am asking you to vote yes on HB 4471 / SB 2801, legislation that would prevent the spread of DIY machine guns in our state. These are deadly, converted handguns made with just a tiny piece of plastic known as a "switch," that are popping up all over our state at an alarming rate.

ATF data shows that recovery of machine gun conversion devices, including switches, increased 784% from 2019 to 2023. This is a growing safety crisis that needs to be addressed urgently in our state.

Please vote yes on HB 4471 / SB 2801 this session to stop the spread of these devices in IL.
