Everytown for Gun Safety

Colorado Lawmakers Should Support Bills That Promote Secure Firearm Storage

Firearms are the leading cause of death among children and teens in Colorado. Securely storing firearms can save lives.

HB 1106 would require firearms that children or a prohibited person could access to be securely stored, either with a locking device or inside a locked gun safe, when not in the control of the gun's owner. This bill would help prevent unintentional child shootings and suicides.

SB 78 would require gun owners to report to law enforcement when their gun is lost or stolen. The majority of the 23,000 stolen firearms recovered by police between 2010 and 2016 were recovered in connection with crimes, including more than 1,500 violent acts.

Tell your CO lawmakers to support HB 1106 and SB 78 >>

I'm one of your constituents asking you to support two bills that would save lives: HB 1106 and SB 78.

Since 2015, there have been at least 21 unintentional shootings by children in Colorado, resulting in 9 deaths and 13 injuries. Children and people legally prohibited from having guns routinely gain access to firearms because those firearms are not stored in a secure and responsible manner. HB 1106 would prevent unauthorized access to firearms and unintentional shootings by requiring firearms that a juvenile or prohibited person could access to be securely stored, either with a locking device or inside a locked gun safe, when not under the control of the gun's owner.

Gun owners are significantly less likely to have a gun stolen if they store all of their guns locked and unloaded, yet more than half of gun owners do not store all of their guns securely. Stolen firearms are routinely diverted to the underground market where people with dangerous histories can more easily obtain firearms without restriction. The majority of the 23,000 stolen firearms recovered by police between 2010 and 2016 were recovered in connection with crimes, including more than 1,500 violent acts. That's why we should also pass SB 78, which would require gun owners to report to law enforcement when their gun is lost or stolen.

Please support HB 1106 and SB 78 to advocate for responsible gun ownership and save lives.
