Every day in America, more than 110 people die from gun violence. The Biden-Harris Administration has taken some key actions to address this crisis, but there is so much more that must be done.
At the center of efforts to fight gun violence should be the ATF. This federal agency is responsible for regulating the gun industry, rooting out rogue gun dealers, and keeping ahead of dangerous gun industry innovations like ghost guns and bump stocks.
But the ATF is in urgent need of an overhaul to make it an effective and empowered agency. For too long, the gun industry has been allowed to write its own rules, which has had deadly consequences. It's time we had an ATF strong enough and empowered enough to do its job and rein in the industry's reckless and deadly practices.
This starts with President Biden nominating a strong ATF director to lead the ATF into the 21st century. The Administration must also implement desperately needed reforms including:
- Providing the resources and leadership it needs to do its job: Regulating the gun industry and enforcing the laws we have on the books.
- Ending 20 years in the dark by publishing information and data on gun trafficking and the source of illegal guns.
- Cracking down on the ways that guns change hands in 2022 like the no-background check marketplaces that are a source for gun traffickers.
- Modernizing how gun stores operate by updating the policies and requirements for doing business and bringing the industry into the 21st century.
- Bringing rogue gun dealers to justice: While the gun industry enjoys broad protection from civil suits, the ATF has the power to stop them. The ATF can step up its inspections and take swift action to hold bad actors accountable.
- Being proactive in regulating new and emerging technologies to stay ahead of bad actors and criminals.
Prioritizing and reforming the ATF should be at the center of President Biden's efforts to address the gun violence crisis in America.
