Everytown for Gun Safety

Tell Lawmakers: Stop DIY Machine Guns in Connecticut

Machine guns are weapons of war—but in Connecticut, gun manufacturers can still make and sell pistols that can easily be converted into machine guns with a cheap device called a "switch." Once converted, these DIY machine guns can fire at a rate of up to 1,200 rounds per minute. Recoveries of these deadly devices are on the rise across the country.

California recently passed a law to stop this, and we can too!

Dear Lawmaker,

As a constituent, I am asking you to support HB 5043 which would prevent the sale of handguns that can easily be converted into machine guns.

With common household tools and a cheap, Lego-sized piece of plastic called a "switch," certain handguns can be converted into fully automatic machine guns capable of firing up to 1,200 rounds per minute.

ATF data shows that recovery of machine gun conversion devices, including switches, has increased 784% from 2019 to 2023. This is a growing safety crisis that needs to be addressed to keep our communities safe.

HB 5043 would strengthen basic design safety standards for handguns to make sure no one can sell pistols in Connecticut that can easily be converted into machine guns.

Please stop DIY machine guns to help protect Connecticut communities.
