The distinctive noise that a gun makes is one of its most important safety features: when people hear a gunshot, they know to run, hide, protect themselves or notify law enforcement. For decades, federal laws have kept silencers accessible only to law-abiding citizens and prevented them from falling into the wrong hands.
Now the corporate gun lobby, gun silencer spokesman Donald Trump, Jr., and their friends in Congress are pushing for radical legislation that would profit gun companies by gutting silencer safety requirements.
Add your name and tell Congress: OPPOSE roll back of gun silencer safety laws -- and don't put gun industry profits over public safety!
As a constituent concerned with the safety of my family and community, I urge you to please remove the gun silencers provision from the SHARE Act.
The distinctive sounds of gunshots allow bystanders and law enforcement to react quickly in emergency situations. But gun silencers distort those sounds -- and that can make shootings even more dangerous. The gun silencers provision of the SHARE Act would make it easier for felons, domestic abusers, and people with dangerous mental illnesses to buy gun silencers. It would throw out existing federal public safety laws and enable criminals to buy gun silencers without a background check, simply by buying from anyone who is not a gun dealer.
This bill puts the profits of gun manufacturers ahead of public safety. We know that during active and mass shooting situations, hearing gunshots can mean the difference between life and death. Protecting communities and law enforcement is more important than gun company profits. So, please remove the gun silencers provision from the SHARE Act.
