Everytown for Gun Safety

Urge Governor Deal to VETO guns on campus legislation

Last year, Georgia Governor Nathan Deal vetoed a dangerous bill that would have forced colleges to allow guns on campus. He made that decision after hearing from people across Georgia.

But after midnight, on the last day of this year's session, Georgia lawmakers passed a new version of the bill. Last year, Gov. Deal said it would take an overwhelming justification to allow guns on campus, and nothing in this year's bill provides that justification. There's still no reason to go against the will of campus law enforcement, leaders, faculty and students.

That's why we need your voice again -- to make sure Gov. Deal stands by his veto from last year and his opposition to guns on campus legislation.

Use this form to sign a petition urging Gov. Deal to VETO guns on campus legislation.

Dear Governor Deal --

As a concerned Georgia resident, I urge you to VETO HB 280.

Last year, your veto statement read, “From the early days of our nation and state, colleges have been treated as sanctuaries of learning where firearms have not been allowed. To depart from such time-honored protections should require overwhelming justification. I do not find that such justification exists.”

We support your well reasoned veto and urge you to please continue your opposition of guns on campus legislation by vetoing HB 280.

This new bill does not address the core concerns in your veto statement. Forcing colleges to allow guns on campus is a dangerous choice for Georgia that continues to be opposed by campus leaders and stakeholders. For these reasons, I urge you to continue to stand up for public safety once again, and VETO HB 280.

Sincerely,
