Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced a bill in the Senate that would help ensure that federal agencies and states submit records of convicted criminals and domestic abusers into the National Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
We need to let our Senators know that they MUST pass this critical first step to strengthen our background check system. Send a message now to your Senators and tell them to support this bipartisan bill.
Dear Lawmaker --
As a constituent concerned with the safety of my family and community, I urge you to please support S. 2135, a bill to strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) and enforce existing federal law.
This bipartisan bill is an important first step to improve submission of records into the background check system and keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers and convicted felons.
This legislation would give incentives to federal agencies to get their records into the background check system -- and hold them accountable if they don't. Further, it would incentivize states to submit their own records into NICS. The criminal background check system is only as good as the records it contains. Congress should do everything it can to ensure that states and federal agencies submit records to the background check system.
After the horrific mass shootings we've witnessed over the past few months and the gun violence that kills more than 90 Americans each day, we must do something. That's why I urge you to please support S. 2135.
