Everytown for Gun Safety

Tell Ohio Senators to Oppose Stand Your Ground!

SB 237 is a Stand Your Ground bill that would allow a person to shoot to kill another person in public — even if there is a safe and clear way to walk away from the danger.

At least 30 people nationwide are killed each month as a result of Stand Your Ground laws. These laws are associated with increases in homicides and injuries across different demographics and neighborhoods, while disproportionately impacting communities of color. A Stand Your Ground law would threaten public safety and make all Ohio residents less safe.

Send a message telling your senator to oppose SB 237:

As one of your constituents, I'm urging you to oppose SB 237 — a dangerous bill that would threaten our public safety by allowing a person to shoot to kill another person in public, even when they can safely walk away from danger.

This legislation is dangerous and will not deter crime in Ohio. At least 30 people nationwide are killed each month as a result of Stand Your Ground laws, which encourage violence in situations that could otherwise be defused.

In Florida, the 2005 implementation of a Stand Your Ground law has been associated with a 32 percent increase in firearm homicide rates and a 24 percent increase in overall homicide rates.

Ohioans want our lawmakers to enact meaningful reforms to reduce gun violence in our communities, not roll back our gun laws further. Put the safety of your constituents first and oppose SB 237.
