Everytown for Gun Safety

Tell Your MI Rep: Keep Guns Out of the Hands of Domestic Abusers

Domestic violence and guns are a deadly mix. In a domestic violence situation, access to a gun makes it five times more likely that a woman will be killed.

Michigan lawmakers have the chance to close legal loopholes that give domestic abusers easy access to guns, but they need to hear from their constituents.

HB 4497 and HB 4498 would prohibit people subject to active personal protection orders and people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes from purchasing or possessing guns. These bills would enable Michigan police to protect women and families by keeping guns out of the hands of their abusers.

Tell your lawmaker to protect Michigan families and support HB 4497 and HB 4498 >>

As your constituent, I'm calling on you to prioritize the safety of Michigan residents by supporting HB 4497 and HB 4498 — important domestic violence legislation currently in the House Judiciary Committee.

HB 4497 and HB 4498 would protect Michigan communities by prohibiting people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes and people subject to active personal protection orders from purchasing or possessing guns. This legislation would enable local and state police to effectively enforce these laws to protect women and families.

Federal law currently prohibits people convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence and those subject to domestic violence restraining orders from possessing firearms. Over two dozen states have enacted similar laws with strong bipartisan support, but Michigan has yet to take action. Research shows that states with laws prohibiting people subject to domestic violence protection orders from possessing firearms have seen a 13 percent reduction in intimate partner firearm homicides and a 10 percent reduction in intimate partner homicide.

Michigan should help keep guns out of the hands of domestic abusers by passing HB 4497 and HB 4498. I urge you to support this legislation and protect women and families from deadly domestic violence.
