Everytown for Gun Safety

Tell MD Senators: Override Gov. Hogan’s Veto and Close Dangerous Background Check Loophole

For two decades, Maryland has required background checks for all sales of handguns. This law prohibits people with dangerous histories from buying handguns—but it doesn't apply to private sales of rifles or shotguns.

Last March, our state legislators moved to close that loophole and protect communities across Maryland. But Governor Hogan vetoed the bill.

Now, our state senators are voting this week to override Hogan's veto and protect gun safety.

Send a message to your state senator to stand up for gun safety and close this dangerous background check loophole >>

Dear Senator,

We need you to close a dangerous background check loophole in our state.

For two decades, Maryland has required background checks for all sales of handguns—but it doesn't apply to private sales of rifles or shotguns.

Last year, you and our other state legislators moved to close the loophole—but Governor Hogan vetoed the bill.

Rifle and shotgun sales have surged in Maryland during the COVID-19 pandemic, making it more important than ever to enact this law. We need you to stand up for gun safety by voting to override Hogan's veto.

Again, please vote to override Hogan's veto.
