Everytown for Gun Safety

Fix the Illinois gun purchasing system!

In February 2019, a shooter killed five people and injured six others in Aurora, IL. This shooting exposed devastating weaknesses in the way that people buy guns in Illinois — the Firearm Owners Identification Card or FOID system.

A bill in the legislature would close the gaps in the FOID system and help keep guns away from people who should not own firearms. Tell your lawmakers to support this bill!

I'm writing to ask you to support SB 1966 and oppose SB 2260. SB 1966 is a bill which would fix the Illinois FOID system and help keep guns away from people who cannot pass a criminal background check. SB 2260 doesn’t go far enough to address deadly gaps in our gun laws, with key provisions like point of sale background checks on all gun sales stripped out entirely.

SB 1966 would strengthen Illinois law and address many of the gaps in the current law that enabled the Aurora shooting in February 2019, the Mercy Hospital shooting and the everyday gun violence plaguing our state.

SB 1966 would:
* Require a point-of-sale background check for all unlicensed gun sales
* Require FOID applicants to apply in person with the State Police and require fingerprints as part of the application process
* Require action by law enforcement to remove guns once a FOID Card is revoked
* Reduce the FOID Card duration from 10 years to 5 years
* Strengthen the Concealed Carry Licensing process

I hope you'll vote for SB 1966 and keep our communities safe from gun violence.
