Everytown for Gun Safety

Tell The ATF: Enforce The Law And Stop Ghost Guns Now

Ghost guns are one of the nation's fastest growing gun safety problems.

These firearms can enter and proliferate in communities entirely undetected. That's because they're made from unregulated gun parts that let anyone with a drill and an hour make their own firearm — all without a background check.

This gaping loophole means that individuals who shouldn't have guns — such as felons, domestic abusers, or gun traffickers — can undermine all of our nation's gun laws in just one hour, the time it takes to assemble a firearm. In many states, it's already happening: a ghost gun was used in a school shooting in California, and law enforcement across the country are recovering more and more of them from crime scenes.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) can put an end to this crisis in one fell swoop. That's because it's the ATF's fault that this crisis even exists: Under the Bureau's current interpretation of federal law, it allows the unregulated sale of "unfinished" gun parts that can be turned into a functioning firearm in mere minutes. No background check, no traceable serial number, nothing.

We need to tell the ATF to clarify its regulations and enforce the law immediately. Police are already starting to recover increasing amounts of these untraceable firearms. If gone unchecked, ghost guns can devastate our communities and undo years of lifesaving gun violence prevention work.
