TX TC Be SMART Arlington ISD Back to School

Tarrant County Moms Demand Action chapter has been tabling the Be SMART campaign at Arlington's Back to School Kickoff. This has been a GREAT opportunity to share secure gun storage information with parents and attendance at this event is huge. We are looking for volunteers to take 1 to 2 hour shifts on August 2. The event is held outside AT&T Stadium and a canopy will shield us from the sun. You will be passing out information and gun locks if requested. Join us for our annual summer picnic at Horner Park! This is a great chance to learn about our group and opportunities for getting involved, while meeting others. Firearms are the leading cause of death for American and Tennessee children. Secure firearm storage is an effective prevention approach to this public health epidemic. Be SMART provides education for parents and all adults, including gun owners and non gun owners, about the importance of, and strategies for, secure firearm storage, as well as ways to normalize secure storage conversations. Come by our table where we will be demonstrating the use of a biometric safe and role playing asking families about firearm storage.

Each year, his mother, Bethany, honors his memory and birthday with "Lawrencefest"—a joyful gathering of family, friends, and community to celebrate Lawrence. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 16, in honor of what would have been Lawrence’s 21st birthday on August 20. Tradesman Tavern is donating a portion of the proceeds to Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, a 501(c)(3). Other opportunities to support our gun violence prevention work in Ohio include bidding on gift baskets, a 50/50 raffle, and direct donations. We’re training grassroots volunteers and gun violence survivors to take the next step in their advocacy: Running for office or working on campaigns with a purpose — to elect Gun Sense Candidates. Because, in order to be part of the solution, you have to demand a seat at the table. Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities are disproportionately impacted by gun violence. We want to build a movement that can tackle gun violence in all communities; doing that requires that people from all communities are part of our team. Providing information about your racial identity is optional and helps us build the most impactful movement possible.

Elmhurst Moms Demand Action is walking with Chicago Survivors for "A Walk Toward Healing." This family friendly event is fundraising for Chicago Survivor's free, healing summer camp to 50 youth impacted by homicide in Chicago. The walk is approximately 2 miles. Registration will begin at 1:30 pm at the back of the Frick Center, speakers will begin at 2:00 pm, the walk will start at 2:20 pm. RSVP so we know to expect you!

OK-MIA-IN HER SHOES SIMULATION-September meeting

Our September meeting will focus on Domestic Violence Awareness. Every year, an average of 16 women are fatally shot by an intimate partner in Oklahoma. 60% of female intimate partner homicide victims are killed with a gun. In 2023, 30 victims were killed in murder-suicides and 50 were killed in intimate partner homicides, which is the highest ever recorded. Notably, women comprised 82 percent of intimate partner homicide victims. This continues a trend for Oklahoma consistently ranking in the Top 10 states nationally of women being murdered by men in single-victim-single-offender incidents. This simulation was created to allow individuals to step into a survivor's shoes and navigate the system as they experience domestic violence. From working with an advocate, to navigating the court system, to making life or death choices, participants walk away with a new perspective of what survivors go through to get out of an abusive situation.

We invite all Texas survivors of gun violence to attend our Monthly Survivor Meeting. Identifying as a survivor encompasses different experiences: intimidation or receiving threats with a gun, being wounded by a gun, witnessing an act of gun violence, or having someone you know or care about wounded by or killed with a gun. We want to connect with our BROADER Texas survivors and the friends and family that support them. We also want to be a space that offers resources where you can further stay connected with fellow survivors. You may also be new to Moms Demand Action and feel called to be a part of this important movement due to a gun violence event in your life or that of a loved one. We'd love to connect with you, if you have a special talent or service that may align with gun violence prevention and not sure how or where to begin making personal connections to help end gun violence.
